ISAPP-Baikal Summer School "Exploring the Universe through multiple messengers"

We are pleased to annonce the ISAPP-Baikal Summer School "Exploring the Universe through multiple messengers", which will take place from July 12 to 21, 2018, in the picturesque village Bol'shie Koty (Big Cats) on the shore of the Lake Baikal. 

We invite graduate and PhD students as well as early-career PhDs (postdocs) to attend the School. Exceptionally motivated undergraduates are also welcome. The working language of the school is English. The School offers a unique experience of full scientific immersion "Siberian style":

  • 8 days of lectures given by experts on astroparticle physics, cosmic rays, gamma astronomy, neutrino physics, gravity, and HEP, 
  • plenty of time for questions and informal discussions with lecturers, 
  • intensive study sessions on topics of the lectures held in small groups, 
  • an opportunity to give a presentation or present a poster of own work,
  • friendly atmosphere, new contacts and friends, 
  • and finally the stunning views of the lake Baikal and Siberian Taiga.

Organizers and sponsors

The School is organized jointly by Joint Institute for Nuclear ResearchIrkutsk State University, and International School on AstroParticle Physics (ISAPP). Being simultaneously the 18th event of the series of JINR-ISU Baikal Summer Schools on HEP and Astrophysics, it will merge the traditions of the Baikal Summer school series with the dynamism and experience of ISAPP.

Please arrange for a recommendation letter to be sent to the organizers, if you have not yet done so. 

Since the total number of students attending the school is limited, the applications are subject to selection. The primary selection criteria are your motivation and your own research area, as well as the accompanying recommendation letter.

Organizational issues

Accommodation and Facilities

The accommodation booked for the School participants in Bolshie Koty offers a comfortable stay in wooden houses in wild nature. The conference hall has all necessary lecture equipment, and the coffee breaks are regularly served. Organizing it all in plain nature is a know-how of the Baikal school. Please be aware that the internet connection at B. Koty is limited. The mobile calls are possible with MTS and Tele2 SIM-cards only.

The school fee is 350 Euros (24 000 rub) for students and PhD students and 440 Euros (30 000 rub) for PhDs and others. The fee covers full-board accommodation in Bolshie Koty, all meals, the welcome party and closing dinner, the coffee breaks, and the excursion. The fee is to be paid in cash only. 

There is a limited possibility for financial support for students. The decision and the amount of support will be taken on the case by case basis.


Bol'shie Koty is a small village in the Irkutsk region in Eastern Siberia. The nearest major airport is in Irkutsk. When planning your travel, please take into account the following:

  • The participants are expected to arrive to Irkutsk on July 12th. The usual route to Irkutsk from abroad is by plane via Moscow. The flights arrive to Irkutsk early in morning, so be prepared for a night flight. The two major companies which serve several flights per day are Aeroflot and S7 Airlines. Please notice that July is high season, so book your tickets well in advance.
  • The local organizers will pick you up at the airport, bring together, and organize for the boat Irkutsk-B.Koty (1600 rub per person) in the afternoon. If you arrive in the morning, you will be met at the airport and brought directly to the boat. Please note: if you arrive very early, be prepared for a long wait for the boat. If you arrive on the previous day, you'll need to book a hotel in Irkutsk. This accommodation is on your charge. It can be booked via and similar websites; here are some recommended hotels in Irkutsk. if you need assistance with booking, please contact the organizers.
  • On the way back, the boat from B.Koty will arrive to Irkutsk in the late afternoon of July 21st. If your flight departs in the morning, you will need an overnight stay in Irkutsk, which will again be on your charge.
